Recently I decided to change my joining method on circular knitting altogether. I cast on, then turn and knit back across (as though using two straight needles). Then, at the end of that row, I just keep knitting circularly, ignoring the two non-joined stitches. When I have finished (or whenever the mood strikes), I go back and work in my dangling yarn (much as a dangling participle - you must fix it somehow). I make sure the sewing is snug where the two ends meet and, voila! If you're going to have to go back and darn in that end anyway, you might as well snug up the gap while you're at it. No lumps, bumps, or unsightly fiddly knitting to deal with.
